Rene Mathis, LCSW

Rene Mathis is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and a Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor Level II (CADC-II). He has been a disciple for 31 years and has been married to his wife for 36 years. Together, they have five adult children and four grandchildren.
Rene served in the military for 26 years, where he had the opportunity to travel the world and visit many churches. During his service, he was first introduced to the field of mental health and became a military substance abuse counselor, completing his final two tours in this role. After retiring from the military, he pursued further training, earning his CADC-II and returning to serve as a civilian counselor. While in this position, he earned his master’s degree in social work from the University of Southern California and continued working with the military before transitioning into travel social work. In this capacity, he accepted contracts at men’s and women’s county jails and later at the state prison in San Diego.
Rene eventually returned to more traditional therapy, joining a classmate’s private practice. He now works from home, providing therapy in both English and Spanish to low-income individuals. In addition, he continues to lead Grief Journey groups throughout San Diego and via Zoom, following in the footsteps of his friend and mentor, Dr. Tim Sumerlin.
Protect What Matters: Make Healthy, Spirit-Led Choices
Are we protecting what we value or putting them at risk by our choices? We will look at what is important in our lives and how God has a plan for each of us to enjoy our lives and live to the fullest and not have what we value taken or destroyed. (John 10:10). During our discussion, we will look at lifestyle-related decisions that may impact positively or negatively and explore how family, church, and positive community make a difference to living a life that aligns our behaviors and choices with our values.
